Tò he - ramblings, chaos and inspiration

5 weeks have passed since I started on this project. Weeks of researches, thoughts and planning. Each semester in school I learned a new thing. This time, I've experienced process in its most proper way - 4 weeks of research and set-up, 3 weeks for 1st phrase outcomes, which I have spent a third of it for process chart sketches. My outcomes includes my own process chart, like what I've done so far - Mood board - Photo Ethnography.

I know this is nothing compares to some giant huge projects that my peers everywhere are working on. This is just a start to, hopefully, a larger scheme. Still, I am thrilled at the thought of showing everything - my thoughts, my sketches, anything from scratch. What would it turn out to be at the end of the day? Will I be able to record things properly and get feedback? How well do I deliver my works to people?

Well. I have to say sometimes I am so unmotivated to post stuff. It might be boring/ insignificant/ irrelevant to you readers ( or forget it, I'm just making excuses for my laziness...) Anyways, I am digging into Vietnamese propaganda art and stamp and vintage style to get inspiration for my Tò he visual looks. As you might know, I am making an entire book about Tò he. 30pp only, but I know for sure that baby's gonna play hard to get... I will include not only basic information like WH-s questions but also all of your contribution as well, I'd love to include your memories with Tò he!

Yeah today I had a lecture about social participation. An artwork without viewer is no better than doodles. A project without participants is not gonna go anywhere. This time I have a fairly bold statement for my Tò he: people will talk about it, view it, share it. Only in that way would my project survive and live on after assessment. Because I see no point of giving out all my effort for a school project, after all it's such an interesting brief for me. I just have to believe in passion and patience for Tò he!

Sketches and ideas I have, execution isn't a major problem but I'm more concerned with how well I'm able to communicate. What would make people want to contribute? Should I post some stuff, photos, images, drawings on face book and blog... anything to kick-start the mood? What kind of question will evoke people's mind? how would they like to contribute? directly through interview or through doodles and memoirs? What's the possibilities of interaction?

Well so much has been going on in my head recently but the visual part hasn't come out yet. Please bear with me, this is my CPJ after all.. Sometimes I feel so bad to keep you guys waiting for my next step ( In case there are people who keep track of this project, because I never get comments here...) How long has it been since my 1st report?

Well, let's take a break. Just want to share with you guys about Vietnamese Propaganda art (Tranh cổ động) When I was in high school, I never really give Propaganda art a thought. To me it's Communism and War combined, everything is expressed in a biased way so I didn't bother to dig it until now. Turned out Propaganda art is one of the finest works I've seen, regarding Vietnam graphic design. In the past, everything was done in 4 colors maximum - it gave the artwork a sense of simplicity and sophistication. Plus they hand-printed it!
Sadly things have changed for the worse. They cannot afford to find and hire aspiring, devoted artists anymore so there are less qualified works. Those we see on the streets nowadays are poor improvisations of what we used to have. C'mon, lousy rainbow gradients and glossy banner? (....) And together with the boom of digital software and trends, silkscreen Propaganda posters are now only to the elite and foreigners.

I managed to find this website online, they curated some of the best propaganda posters I've seen. So set aside your hard feelings for politics, serve yourself a set of Tranh cổ động. They are as bold as fish sauce.

Good morning lads, leave me a word if you're in the mood. It'd be super nice to receive comments and feedback =D
