During the making of this photo shoot, we went as low-tech as we could. Two 3M polarizing lights, few sheets of cloth, basic make-up sets from the girl, A1 black cardboard and hmm...that's it. Shoot with Canon7D and 50mm 1.8 by both me and Khairi. Oh this time this was REAL face painting, not like what I used for the last 2 shoots ( which was color powder and china face painting that stuck like hell)
This time we rounded up concept and the looks before executing. I've grown up haha! We had great time making the props and initially there were 2 more looks: bareback and big ears. However the big ears looked ridiculous after we tried out several mock-ups. Guess there are things that should forever remain normal size. Bare back: not relevant and no time to shoot at all. It took us 2 days for concepts and ideas, 1 for preparing props, 1 for actually shooting, 1 for touch-ups, 1 for weaving and shooting the finals (including 2 hours got stuck in the rain and "vừa lao động vừa ca hát" at the front site of Sunshine plaza. Ironic is it? We were caught by the rain at Sunshine plaza...)
Have you ever wonder what the hell do they teach in art school? Well just to assure one thing, we do not chill all days drawing whatever stuff. We are taught to THINK arts. Because of that (no matter how much I hate to do this part) I myself believe that most of the time you'll need to at least read the rationale/description . Otherwise they will be just another nice works you are bumped to everyday.
Thank God I have Serene in my group. I couldn't ask for a better rationale, it perfectly suits the overall mood, as well as the target audiences of HungerTV. So please, spend time sipping these words before you take a bite of visual treat. Happy eating.

Fragments of our memories
Whoever thought our hunger could go out of hand? We were, after all, once young and naive children whose desires and cravings could be easily satisfied by, well, a piggyback or an ice pop.
But no. Things are different now. We've grown up. We're greedy. We'd rather have things bigger, better, if not - nothing at all.
Why is bigger, better? Because we all want to be remembered. And in order for that to happen, we'd have to make a powerful impression.
However, the point is, no matter how much we try to play up our features, no matter how much an impression we try leave… People are bound to forget. That's what our memories are made up of, isn't it? Fragments of our past and present, our dreams and reality, taken apart like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
Inspired by our own wildly curious minds, we sought to produce a series of photographs that combines the art of identity construction, deconstruction and reconstruction.
When pieces fall apart, will we be able to weave them back together again, and still bring out the same details of exaggeration, the aggrandizement that people are often so eager to create for themselves?
Reconstruction 1: I wish people will remember me when the wind caresses my face.
|
Reconstruction 2: I want to bring back to life the region below my cheekbones. No more hiding in the shadows. |
Reconstruction 3: Please tell me it is my luscious lips that I am being hunted and caught for.
|
Reconstruction 4: I saw a Kayan woman. I needed to look like her. Undeterred by modernisation.
|
The process: Photographs were first shot in a home studio (with two fat rabbits hopping about), then printed out, sliced, and pieced together again.
